Recreational Fires

Can I have a recreational fire?

Recreational fires are allowed in the City of Zimmerman when the following provisions are followed:

  • The fire is contained to a 3x3 foot area; this can be in-ground, on-ground, or in a free-standing, pre-manufactured fireplace.
  • Only clean-burning wood can be used.  No burning of trash, leaves, or brush is allowed.
  • The fire is at least 25 feet from any structure or combustible material.
  • Fire extinguishing equipment (extinguisher, garden hose, sand) is readily available.
  • The fire should be constantly attended by an adult, and shall be completely extinguished before leaving the scene.

Residents are encouraged to review their homeowner’s insurance policy, as many restrict the location and use of fire pits.

Burning permits are not required for small recreational fires.  For larger burns, a burning permit should be obtained. Burning permits can be obtained from Hudson Hardware or online at https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/forestry/fire/questions.html
