Effective crime prevention begins with strong neighborhoods and community relationships. The Sherburne County Sheriff’s Office urges all County residents to participate in Minnesota’s Night to Unite on Tuesday, Aug. 5. While this may seem like a long way off, it’s not too early to start planning your neighborhood festivities now!
Similarities & Differences With Events
Minnesota will again be celebrating their local statewide crime prevention event titled Night to Unite on Aug. 5. Many of the same ideas National Night Out promotes can be considered with Night to Unite. Night to Unite focuses on getting to know one another in your neighborhood, building relationships with law enforcement, and bringing awareness to crime prevention.
Strengthening Neighborhoods
This is the time to get together with your neighbors. Choose to keep your neighborhood safe by watching out for each other and reporting crime and suspicious behavior. A Minnesota Night to Unite event in your neighborhood could be as simple as locking your door, turning on your outside lights, and gathering the neighbors in the front yard to get to know each other while sipping some lemonade. Still, other neighborhoods may choose to have a BBQ and potluck-type atmosphere with games and activities for participants to partake in. It is important that your neighborhood tailors its event to those that live there.
A strong community is a safe community. Everything we do to strengthen the ties among neighbors of all ages, backgrounds, and lifestyles makes our present and future that much brighter. We hope that you and your neighbors will join our office in giving crime and drugs a going-away party.
Importance of Registration
Why register your event with the Sheriff’s Office? It is important to register your gathering so we can do our very best to send a Sheriff's representative to your event. Consider it a great time to build relationships with your neighbors, law enforcement, and other emergency personnel. It is also an opportunity to rekindle the spirit of your Neighborhood Watch program or to start a new program with the energy from the evening. Download a Registration form (PDF). Night to Unite (National Night Out) is a statewide event that builds and fosters community bonds between citizens, businesses, and public safety organizations, such as the Sherburne County Sheriff’s Office. This annual celebration gathers neighborhoods and public safety personnel together to promote safer communities.
Night to Unite Goals are to:
- Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness
- Generate support and participation in crime prevention and community policing programs
- Strengthen neighborhood spirits and public safety-community partnerships
- Let criminals know that you are committed to keeping your neighborhood safe
Neighborhoods across the state display outdoor lights and front porch vigils and celebrate with a variety of events and activities, including block parties and cookouts, with visits from sheriff’s offices, police and fire departments, and elected officials.
Night to Unite has proven to be an effective, inexpensive, and enjoyable opportunity to promote neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships in pursuit of safer communities. Community benefits often extend beyond this single evening event as neighbors get to know each other and the public safety agencies that serve them.
